Local SEO for Service Business Websites: A Practical Playbook

Local SEO helps service businesses show up when buyers search "[service] near me" or "[service] + city". Your website and Google Business Profile have to work together. Here is a practical playbook we use with contractors, clinics, and local operators.

What local buyers actually type

  • "plumber near me"
  • "roof repair Minneapolis"
  • "dentist open Saturday [city]"
  • "emergency HVAC [neighborhood]"

Your site should answer those queries with clear service pages, city pages when needed, and a phone number that is one tap away.

Playbook step 1: Google Business Profile

Claim and complete it:

  • Correct categories
  • Service area or storefront address
  • Hours, phone, website URL
  • Real photos of your work
  • Regular posts when you finish jobs

Reviews matter. Ask happy customers while the job is fresh.

Playbook step 2: Match site structure to search intent

Build pages for:

  • Core services (each one earns its own page when the offer is distinct)
  • Primary cities you actually serve

We publish city landing pages for markets where local intent is strong. See Minneapolis as an example pattern.

Playbook step 3: NAP consistency

Name, address, phone should match everywhere: site footer, GBP, directories, invoices. Inconsistencies confuse Google and customers.

Playbook step 4: On-page basics that still move the needle

  • Title tags with service + city when relevant
  • H1 that matches the page promise
  • Fast mobile load (Core Web Vitals guide)
  • Embedded map or clear service area copy
  • Unique content per city page (not copy-paste spam)

Playbook step 5: Conversion after the click

Ranking without conversion is unpaid advertising for your ego. Every local page needs:

  • Click-to-call
  • Short form
  • Trust (reviews, licenses, before/after)

Contractors: see website design for contractors.

What not to do

  • Buy fake reviews
  • Spin the same paragraph across 40 city pages
  • Hide the phone number
  • Launch a slow site and "fix SEO later"
